In these tough economic times, Wegmans is willing to help out by lowering their prices on hundreds of items throughout their store. I really liked this quote from Danny Wegman... "During difficult times like these, it's okay with us if we make a little less money."

Wegmans frozen appetizers

Just in time for holiday parties Wegmans put out a line of frozen appetizers. This takes a lot of work out the frenzy of preparing for a party.

Have you noticed a change around Wegmans? They changed their logo! The old one above and the new one is below.

Mmm gravy

Who doesn't like gravy on their mashed potatoes? But sometimes it is a pain to make. Wegmans now makes a straight-from-the-box gravy. As the product page says... "So now you can enjoy that bottom of the pan flavor any night of the week! "

Peets Coffee at Wegmans

Finishing Butters

Wegmans Bruiser Dog Food

After thinking about how the Wegman's brand kitty food is named after Danny Wegman's cats, I looked into the dog food too.
Sure enough "Bruiser" was the name of Danny Wegman's dog. The product page says this... ' I loved Bruiser the day we brought him home, and throughout his long life. His health and happiness were very important to me. With Wegmans brand dog food, you can be assured your dog will enjoy a complete and balanced meal - Bruiser loved it! I'm proud to put my name on this bag. - Danny Wegman."

Sadly it seems that Bruiser has passed away, but his name will live on!

Sustainability at Wegmans

The Wegmans website has a great page about sustainability. You can see what Wegmans is doing to help the environment and what you can do too.

There is interesting info like this... In 2007, all Wegmans stores changed from styrofoam fish fry containers to boxes made from natural fibers like sugarcane and grass! Cool!

I am a serious Vitamin Water addict. I am thrilled that Wegmans now makes their own vitamin infused beverage... Aqua-V. They are so refreshing and more affordable. My favorite flavors are Raspberry Apple and Triple Antioxidants (Acai, Blueberry and Pomegranate). Yum.

Wegmans Buju & Ziggie Food For Cats

So Wegmans makes cat food, which isn't a surprise. The name of the cat food, Buju and Ziggie is rather "unique" however. A little digging reveals that Buju and Ziggie are the names of Danny Wegman's cats!

This is what it says on the product page... "I recognize that all pets are valuable members of the family. My cats Buju and Ziggie quickly became part of the family from the first day they came home. Their health and happiness are very important to me. With Wegmans brand cat food, you can be assured your cat enjoys a complete and balanced meal - when Buju and Ziggie were kittens, they loved it! They're proud to put their names on this product. Remember, your satisfaction is always guaranteed with Wegmans brand products. -Danny Wegman."

New earth friendly take out containers

Wow! This is so great! Wegmans is now offering paper containers on their Chinese take out bar and salad bar.
It is so nice to have a greener option than styrofoam!

The buzz on Wegmans Super Yogurt

There are a lot of people who think there is something weird with the Wegmans Super Yogurt (especially lacto-vegetarians or those with a fish allergy) and some people who love it. Wegmans has come out with some answers to a few of those questions.

Check out what they have to say....

"Why does the plain version have added sugar?"
Remember that all yogurt starts with the naturally occurring sugar from milk. We added less than a teaspoon of sugar (3 grams = 12 calories) to the 6 oz. plain version (120 calories) in order to offset the taste of the fish oil and inulin, a natural fiber that feeds beneficial probiotic cultures. You’ll find other brands of organic plain yogurt that do not have added sugar, such as Stonyfield, in our Nature’s Marketplace Department.

"Why not add Splenda instead of sugar?"
Artificial sweeteners, like Splenda, are not allowed in certified organic products. The dairy cooler has several light yogurts with sucralose (otherwise known as Splenda), including Wegmans Light Blended Nonfat Blueberry Yogurt (100 calories per 6 oz.).

"Why put seafood ingredients in an organic yogurt?"
Although some organic customers avoid seafood, others have no problem eating foods made with seafood ingredients. In fact, many folks appreciate having other ways to get omega-3s since they don’t always eat the recommended two seafood meals a week. In case you’re wondering, fish gelatin forms micro-capsules around the oil to protect the omega-3s from destruction.

Omega-3s from flax, walnuts and canola are also good, but the conversion rate to the more effective DHA and EPA is low. We've used the same omega-3 ingredient in a line of our breads as well as a few fresh pastas and a whole wheat tortilla. Shoppers choose these for the extra benefits of the omega-3s.

"Other yogurts add pectin instead of beef gelatin. Why doesn’t the Super Yogurt use pectin?"
Either pectin or gelatin is added to help keep yogurt from separating. Pectin is a form of fiber derived from apples or citrus. It’s used in making fruit-on-the-bottom style yogurts. However, the other style, referred to as blended yogurt, has been trending as the more popular choice with shoppers. That’s why we made Super Yogurt in the blended style.

Most blended yogurts, including those by Dannon, Yoplait and Wegmans brands, use gelatin to get the right texture and sheen. Gelatin is a purified protein from beef, pork, or fish that has been added to foods (think Jello™) for well over a hundred years. The beef gelatin we use is kosher certified by the Orthodox Union and is considered "parve" under kosher dietary law.

So there you have it. It would seem best to always read the label... no matter if you think a food item is organic or natural.

Coolest Ham

I want to get one of these Wegmans Signature Hams so badly, but that's a lot of ham! The thin spiral slices look delicious. I could never cut my ham that thin by hand. Sooo good for Easter.

They come in cool shiny foil wrappers too.

Peeps Peeps!

Pittsford Wegmans is having the coolest "cooking class".

On Friday, March 21 from 10am to 11:30am and 1pm to 2:30pm they are having Get Creative with Peeps.

Using Marshmallow Peeps you will make a Peeps garland and Peepsicles. Everyone takes home the "Peeps! recipe and craft book" too.

It costs $20 per child and adult and each additional child costs $10.

Anybody got a kid I can borrow?

Corned Beef

Baby Cheese

I think it is so cute that they named this cheese "Cooleeney Babies".

The website says "We named these petite soft-ripened cheeses “babies” because they’re simply adorable. "

This earthy mushroomy cheese comes all the way from Ireland. Sounds good for St. Patrick's Day.

Asian Flair

Check out their recipes for Beef with Udon Noodles, Orange Sesame Chicken and Pad Thai Shrimp.

There is a customer review for the pad thai that said "Excellent meal. Has quite an exquisite taste, and is one of the FEW my entire family ate and loved!" and the chicken "Made this for the family and it was very easy. We loved it!"

Valentine's Day Sweets

The front of Pittsford Wegmans is a sea of Valentine's Day goodies. Flowers and strawberries are everywhere. The chocolate is a-flowin'.

I plan on giving my friends the new Wegman's brand chocolate bars. The wrappers are funky! And the chocolate inside gives the brand names a run for their money.

Super!

The packaging on this new Wegman's Organic Super Yogurt caught my eye.

SUPER yogurt!

It has probiotic cultures in it for health benefits. And it comes in six flavors.

I can't get over the super part.

I got one and it was pretty good. I especially like it with some granola mixed in.

What I really like are the fresh yogurt parfaits they offer at the front of the stores. Yogurt mixed with fruit and granola. I wonder what yogurt they use? I would guess it's the Wegman's brand yogurt, but it tastes different somehow.

Juice

I was first attracted to the bottle design of this Bossa Nova Açaí Juice, but it sounds like it is really good for you.

No More Smokes

I just read that Wegmans is no longer going to be selling cigarettes. They said it was decided after weighing the role smoking plays in people's health with respect for a person's right to smoke.

"We believe there are few of us who would introduce our children to smoking," stated a letter to employees from Wegmans CEO Danny Wegman and his daughter, Colleen, the company's president.

While they don't expect massive numbers of customers to quit smoking, Wegmans Jo Natale said. "But we employ 37,000 people. Many of them are young people under 21. If this sends the right message to them, we will have accomplished something."

I think it is great. Good for them.
